You Are A Tube comical poem 725 by Angela Lansbury

Brunel statue on Paddington station in London, England. Photo by Angela Lansbury Copyright.

We ride upon the London tube

Which carries crowds from place to place

We listen for the destination

Distracting noise, trip feet, frown face

Each body, too, is like a tube

Water drunk in, must then come out

Food follows like the circle line

Drops energy, and germs, no doubt

We scatter workers through the town

To break fast, lunch, and dine and sup

They say that what goes up comes down

When sick what went down comes up

Choose well where to spend day and night

If you go home, sit, watch telly

Drink too much wine, you sleep or fight

But drink beer, get a beer belly

Don't forgot what we should expect.

There's logic, warning, in the world

As science says, cause and effect

Maps, banners, signs, results unfurled.

-ends-

The London underground is called the tube because of the tunnels.

Our Lovely World comical poem 691 by Angela Lansbury

We all live in a lovely world

If we never speak nor read news

If we just think what good we've done

Ignoring lists of what to do

If we admire fine, grand houses

And don't wish that big one was mine

If we ignore old and new wars

But enjoy views, enthuse, 'I'm fine'

The doctor asked me, 'How are you?'

'My mind's fine, thanks - my body's not,

I've got titinitus, hammer toes,

Strange pains, and tunes play in my heart.'

I don't weep for distant victims

Rant about fireworks, nor bombing.

See - no ants, butterflies nearby

Squirrels share their sense of belonging

I relax in isolation

People watch passers-by in crowds

When single, that was my problems

Couples kid's problems? I'd laugh loud

My bird clock. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

When flower perfume pleases us

And each musical bird or tune's pleasure

Breathing fresh air, glad we're alive

Our smiling face in a mirror's our treasure

When we're filled, fulfilled with wonder

The ocean's calm, and blue and deep

If we yawn but gladly to be awake

But prepare to have a good sleep

If we love drinking pure water

As much as Champagne or sweet wine

If we're glad happy with friends or alone

We do live in the perfect time.

Three Close Friends Wine Tasting comical poem 671 by Angela Lansbury

'Hello, my name is Natalie,

Here's Janet, that is Beverly

I have a husband, he's not here

He's not a wine man, he likes beer'

Cheese plate. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

Beverley buys a plate of cheese

She hands it round, 'Do take some, please,'

She sends the plate round the table

Making friends, she is capable

Three good friends, smiling and happy

Three good friends, friendly, chatty

Every night they're out and about

They'll live to a hundred, I've no doubt.

The Cure for Typos is Tea. Comical poem 652 by Angela Lansbury

What could go wrong?

I got up late. I need to state

That's why I made everybody wait.

When you're tired, mistakes don't take long.

I now know I'm not the only one at fault

We all make typos. When did I go to bed?

Today someone else has made a worse mistake

Sent us white wine, instead of the ordered red.

I sang out of tune, a well known song.

It was karaoke. I got all the words wrong.

After all of my hype - oh

The first page of my book has a typo!

'Can somebody help me?

And not charge a fee?'

'Yes, I can help you -

If you can help me

'Can you proofread?

Say what I lack

I'd appreciate

Your feedback''

Your poem's sweet, short, succinct

But it would be neater

If it had less predictable rhyme

And found missing metre.

'Why is everyone so rude?

I'm sure that I've done something good.

You should encourage, not discourage!'

I'll dot the ayes and cross the tees and make a cup of perfect tea.

'Now you've offended me

I helped and got no thanks

I gave you feedback

But we've nothing in the bank

'If you didn't want help

Completing this task

You should not get offended

Or, you shouldn't ask.'

My first job is to like myself

The only way to help my health

I'm not a whining wino

My type's worst fault is a typo.

It takes a while to reconcile

Make myself and others like me

But we all feel better now

I've served and drunk a cup of perfect tea.

Wine And Dine O'clock comical poem 632 by Angela' Lansbury

Morning At Ate O'clock

I'm always in the mood for food

It's necessary and does you good

My husband's joke on wine o clock

Started a poem I can't stop

I rise early often at six

To eat my morning wake-a-bix

It's time for water, not yet wine

Seven's my first brekoffee time

Water bottle. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

But then at eight it's eight a break

You have to wait

And weight yourself

 No-eating break for losing weight

I kick the kilo readout with incredulous sorrow

And note in my diary, diet -  tomorrow

Eight's known in dialect as eat-a clock

But Americans call it wheat o'clock

You might snack on your rice crispies

Like healthy vegan vegetime with beans and peas

After you've had your yog-a clock

You could set off for your jog a clock

For some lunch time is sandwich time

Ladies who lunch, schoolchildren dine

From fruit o'lock to soup o'clock

At twelve a buffet delve o'clock

Afternoon At Tea O'clock

Already hungry three o'clock?
Then have an early tea--clock
Stricly bee time, not a sea time
Strictly vegan, milk-free, mint and pea time

There's one event no child will knock

It's chocolate birthday cake o'clock

You might be wondering why, dear cock

They do not call it higher clock

Tea'time's replaced by coffee-clock

I'd rather have cakes choc-a block

Instead pf shopping round the block

Cook banoffee and toffee-clock

In Scotland where bodies are mighty

They have a huge five o clock High-tea

Plan snacking on some sweet nuts and dates

A nice time with riectime on dinner  plates

Evening Around Wine O'Clock

At six it's aperitif-a clock
Andcock a clock for cocktails
Instead of food hich is hearty
In England there's a food-free sherry party

At eight bubbly at Champagne-o'clock
Before the piled dinner plate o'clock
Theres the meet and greet o'clock
Then the all you can eat o'clock

The Spaniards all eat late o-clock
They dine at nine for wino clock

But then again there's ten a clock
For cok au vin and parties for hen o'clock
At eleven washing up o clock
Also known as clear up and clear off a clock

Now restaurant ban smoke a clock
Wwe used to have a late night coco clock
At midnigh there's no need to stop
Finally there's midnight snack oclock

And then we go to sleep to dream
Of all the food we've ever seen.
The body's a ong food and water pipe
Put it in and let it churcn around at night

In the morning the body can hail and rain
Make room for filling up again
That's why I've different times on clocks
And take away bags in my socks..

If alllergleis don't do you harm
Wake up for food with your phone's food alarm
A mobile's phone's main use I feel
Until those hunger pains get rea

You did not eat for hours - what shock!
Make sure you do not miss a meal
Make sure your phone has not been locked
But wakes each hour for food o'clock..

Quick Change From Zero To Hero comic poem 490 by Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury, in London, December 2024. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

From water to wine

From wine to water

In moderation,

Smiles, not loud laughter

There was some laughter

I learned a lot

From the new contacts

I have got

I have a lot

Of tales to tell

The best news is

That I slept well

From friend to lover

From drunk to sober

From youth to wisdom

I'm not hungover

From wake to stare

From now to where

From here to there

From table to chair

From walk to talk

From board to chalk

From reader to preacher

From learner to teacher

From search to mess

From shower to dress

From smile to kissed

From wrist to list

From what shall I say

To have a nice day

From inner swearword

To please go away

From a simple poem

To lots of knowing

From understanding

To telling and showing

From minus one

To starting snowing

From getting ready

To I'm not going

From late breakfast

To a late lunch

From Americanisms

To thanks - a bunch

To wondering whether

I'm wasting time

From checking my clock

Your time or mine

From ups and downs

To shrugging off pains

From smiles to frowns

Write down small gains

From getting a parcel

To thanks to send

From a stranger

To a new friend

From day to night

In winter time

The days are short

In a seasonal climes

Just when you bought

Big winter boots

The garden shows

Small green spring shoots

From wondering what

Is round life's bend

From a quick start

To surprise sudden end.

Different Tastes - Why Doesn't Someone Tell Them! comic poem 217 by Angela Lansbury

When I was a small child, I liked milk and water

As a wary teen I met yogurt, strong coffee,

My taste for drinking sweet wines started much later

Loved sweets and chocolate, lost a tooth filling in toffee

Now I love to photograph, tall, fine, green palm trees

But I can't understand why a good God made snakes

Some people like small insects, not high seas, high trees

Fight dengue with insect spreay, you must give or take

Some people tramp the moors, the great cloudy outdoors

Others dance slow in a candle-lit, dim, disco

Brits like a soft carpet, Italians tiled floors

Don't like who you know? Then, no problem. Off you go!

Creative types like lived in houses; called,  "A mess!"

Some stiff types like jackets with buttons and stiff zips

Hoarders are happily slopping around, half-dressed

Tiaras, pink ribbons, sealed packs of hair clips

Some like old jeans, torn, stained with paint, faded

Some like sequins, satins, smart high heels and glitter

Some like bow ties, dress codes, some shrug and are jaded

Some like smoth, soft silk, others think clothes don't matter

Some like green and red salad, healthy juice and fruit

Some would welcome my meals, others beeline to you

Some go barefoot, some love long, leather, kinky boots

Perplexed? Stand in the middle, unfazed, muddle through.

Sometimes it won't matter what you and I can say

With adults it's less stress to not make any fuss

Some unique people prefer to go their own way

Some are grateful for direction. Kids copy us!

My friend, the lawyer, her words echo in my head

Well-paid lawyers work researching all night and day

I'll always remember what she cynically said.

She warned, 'I don't give advice - unless people pay!'

I Have To Start Somewhere comic poem by Angela Lansbury 187a

I turn on the Zoom

And what do I see?

Some funny faces

All looking at me!

Some sit in smart suits

And some look quite odd

But they stare at me

As if I'm a God!

Some are my old friends

And some must be new

Some look familiar

But I have no clue

 Some  people are hot

Some people are cold

Some wide-eyed, so young

Some wrinkled, gray, old

Some silent and shy

Sit back with clasped hands

Some bright, forward, bold

When asked, wave hands

One speaks upside down

Teeth glow in the dark

A dog in a mask

Drags  twins round a park

One poet's fat, in sparkling pink

One strokes a long, white divided beard

One is pouring a frothing drink

No, they're not, as weird, as I feared

I do hope, my darlings

I've caused no offence

I swear, I don't swear

That was not what I meant

That was not my intent

Some have been slimming

Just back from swimming

They shrug when losing

Smile wide when winning

I am not perfect

But have a good plan

When things go haywire

Change subjects, you can

Some leaders look warm

Some stay calm and cool

Some fine as wine, wise

Or well-meaning fools

I hear clocks ticking

I'll read you what's new

I have lots to say

My poems aren't few

Maybe you wonder

Where we are going?

Wait 'til I tell you

You've no way of knowing!

My words like balloons

Words float like bubbles

We're carried away

Forget our troubles

Word rivers flowing

Coming and going

We've so much to do

I reach out to you

I won't give you fears

I won't give you tears

I collect laughter

Joy heard through the years

Soon I must move on

Soon we'll all be gone

But in a small while

I'll leave - a big smile,

-ends-

The word leave in the last line is ambiguous. leave the room, but also leave behind warm, happy smile

Happy or Unhappy Birthday? Comic Poem No. 139

Happy birthday, tut tut

I love the cake, but but

I'm supposed to be on  a diet

I'll have to eat it on the quiet

Birthdays have changed

Since Covid-19

You cannot blow the candles out

You don't know where the germs have been

Another birthday, boo hoo

I don't want to be older than you

Where has the year gone, I say

I'm a year older than yesterday

Another birthday, today it's yours

That's why I'm sending you applause

It's a piece of cake, a glass of wine

Another photo, I feel fine

Because it's not my birthday

Mine is far away

You can be sighing, nearer to dying

Glad it's not mine, it's yours today

Birthdays are best for children

On the scale between girls and boys

Lots of singing out of tune

Balloons, parcels and noise

Toddlers are easily amused

Every day new food is fun

It's great to have survived your first year

When you are only one

Let's have a smiley photo

One year nearer to walk

One year older, one year dearer

Nearer to thank you, love you, small talk

Happy birthday, happy birthday

Smile Smile Smile

Granny hasn't felt this good

For someone else's birthday, for a long, long while.

This is your pilot speaking - again (Comic poem 133)

Boarding Announcement

Welcome, I'm your pilot speaking - again

Expect thunder, lightning, snowstorms, and rain

We're here to greet you with a friendly smile

Rules

Please - no praying, singing, dancing in the aisle.

Is this a real flight? They told me, rehearse
Films show life stuck down mines could be worse
We can't give free slippers, peanuts, nor wine
We sell unhealthy snacks. At midnight, land and dine

Don't queue for toilets; the seats don't recline
Sit like masked robots; We'll get home on time
I'm sorry to say cheap seats don't have free socks
But I'm glad to say the pilot's door locks

Safety
You'll be restrained, if you cause trouble,
If anybody threatens you, run at the double
I'm looking at my checklist, what have I forgot?
I'm practising speeches, the plane's on autopilot

On the runway, see, there's a herd of goats
We're blocked by some kind of demonstration
Fasten your seatbelt, I'll fly above them
They're for, or against, some other nation

And before this long-haul flight begins
Good luck to that pair I see trying for twins
Do what you are told, no ifs or buts
The only nuts are religious nuts

In flight so many depend on so few
Rugby team, security's all on you
Forget the pilot, we're in God's hand
Are you saints or sinners? We know if we land

You're lucky if you're by an empty seat
On planes you never know who you'll meet
When you want to chat and they want to sleep
When you're vegan and they're eating meat

Crew
I promise I'll try to get things right
Clap for the pilot. we're on his first flight
You'll be glad oxygen keeps you alive
I'm scared like you whether we'll all survive

In-Flight Announcements

My co-pilot has gone for a short rest
To comfort a stewardess in distress
You're with friends, drinking and laughing out loud
While I sit alone, and talk to the clouds

Just think about it and then you will see
There's hundreds of you but just one of me!

Ooh - aah oo  aah

Aside
Oops, dear me, Lordy, what on earth's gone wrong?
I watched porn - and left the microphone on.

Emergency Announcement
I'm ever so sorry, we have to turn back
I just found out there's something we lack
My co-pilot hasn't completed his training
Look on the bright side, it isn't raining.

While we look for a co-pilot you'll have to wait
You will start your holiday three hours late
Look on the bright side, we're all still alive
Some days the good news is we have survived.
