Remember - too late, someone I never met. Comical poem 783 by Angela Lansbury

I've had loads of invitations

About somebody who died

I have never ever met them

They have gone out with the tide

I'm sorry friends are sorry

When someone's died or they are ill

It's too late to wish them well

And I don't wish anybody ill

I'd be pleased to hear about them

If retelling brings no stress

I'm sure you can say something good

About their joys and their success

I am reading what is said of them

Will the same apply to me?

Will I live and die differently?

Oh, well. What will be will be.

Left and Right Shoes - Choose comic poem 461 by Angela Lansbury

Now left or right

Which do you choose

First from the box

Two neutral socks

Then on the floor

Far from the door

I found my shoes

But got the blues

Two red sandals

They looked a match

Alas there was

An awrful catch

I found I did

Not have a pair

But two left shoes

I could not wear

That was something

Which did annoy

I looked again

And, oh, what joy!

Another pair of

Two right shoes

It dis not take

Me long to choose

I'm now wearing

One matchd pair

No longer fear

Of others' stare

I must have bought

Two pairs in red

They found their freinds

Beside my bed

One moment's stress

I'm in a mess

A small effort

Joy of successs!

After I'd had

A little think

I matched them up

With each strap link

I'm very proud

Of what I've done

And hope that you

Enjoyed the fun.

Her Name Was Becky, she wasn't a techie - comic poem by Angela Lansbury

Her name was Becky; she wasn't a techie

She wasn't a fool, 'cos she went to art school

She wore a short dress - it was such a success

No boy could resist when that girl did the twist!

Her ear-rings shook, long - she could do nothing wrong

Black eyes, her face pale, one ex-boyfriend on bail

But what did he break? She claimed, 'just a mistake'

She got in a muddle, lost keys, such trouble

Yet she smiled, easy-going, always such fun

She quoted her Mum - 'there's someone for everyone'

She was my best friend, but, all good things must end

She married young. Why?  Had had a baby begun?

She did well for herself, found a millionaire

He was short and bald, she chopped off her long hair

I often wish I could find her, somehow

Bohemian Becky - please - where is she now?

Based on my friend Cynthia. She went to art school. She had short hair and long dangling ear-rings. In the Swinging Sixties. We travelled to Greece, Turkey and Israel together. She married young. We lost touch.

Running In The Gym

I see earnest people jogging
Running to the gym
And then I see them running
They are running in the gym

Where are they running?
Where are they going?
Are their minds racing?
There's no way of knowing

Are they running from their past?
Or chasing youth which will not last?
Or running to their fit future self
A mirage of fitness and health

Where will all this running end?
Why did it ever begin?
Let me in on the secret
The thought wipes grins, makes me grim

When I walk past the gym
I want to run away
I know I ought to be there
I really must - another day!

Now I swim back and forth
But I'm not in the open sea
I'm just in a huge swimming pool
But that's okay by me

But maybe runners think the same
That I'm playing a silly game
That swimming back and forth is funny
I'd be better off earning money

A running machine, a rowing machine
And a tiny towel to wipe it clean
Jim's answer to, "Where have you been?"
"I'm fit. Try it!" I saw him coming

At the end of life, how many will say
I didn't go anywhere today
I didn't have to dress to impress
I did my thing - that's my success!

Tell Me Your Troubles Version 1

Do tell me all of your troubles
Deaths and divorces, don't ask mine
'cos I'll tell then regret it
I say too much, all the time

I'll tell the stranger on the train
Someone I'll never see again
So if they think I'm mad or bad
They won't say so and make me sad

I'll offload sadness and sorrow
To strangers who are gone tomorrow
Who won't still be there to remind me
So I can put it all behind me

But tell me all your troubles
So I can sympathise
I won't pretend I'm a success
No need to tell you polite lies

I won't tell you all my troubles
Revive what I'd rather forget
I don't dare tell uou the whole truth
Sometimes it's better not

Books talk about self-doubt
And the imposture syndrome
Ive come here for a holiday
To escape my problems at home

But I watch the woman confessing all
On stage, in poems, I sympathise
I want to tell you my truth and my lies
And share all with your smiling eyes.
