I read a poem to a rose. Comical poem, post 785 by Angela Lansbury.

I read a poem to a rose

But what it thought nobody knows

Maybe it thought, 'Is that for me?

I'm the prettiest that can be!

'Please do not read me poems

They take your eyes away

Just sniff and smile and look at me

That's all I have to say

'Do your write poems to daisies?

And dandelions too?

And lupins and the other flowers

Your love for me cannot be true

'You don't really care for roses

You admire the taller trees

It's a good thing I'm not jealous

And I'm easy to please.'

We will never know

If a rose is smart or dumb

There are wicked roses which have thorns

Waiting to prick your thumb

But let us look on the bright side

Be on our dear rose's right side

Petals have their dark and light side

Their perfumed day and night side

A rose, everyone smart knows

Always dresses in her best

Every day, a rose always poses

So photogenic, perfect roses.

Praise For Quick, Short Poems comic poem 508 by Angela Lansbury

Tape measure. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

Poems should be quick

Long poems make me sick

This one's short and precise

I think concise is nice.

Comic Writer and Editor - comic poem number 199

There twice was a poor, rich comic writer

Who wrote to a poem book editor

She wrote, 'I write poems, as you can see

If you need some poems, why not call me!

'I can write an amusing limerick

I promise no four-letter words in it

And cautionary tales about naughty fools

Just the thing for teachers at failing schools

'I can write you a classical sonnet

With a caricature of a dinosaur on it ...'

I've been planning this poem for twenty years

I hope it'll move you to laughter - or tears

As soon as you can, relieve my distress

Please send an advance. I trust you'll say yes

If commissions for me aren't piled high on your plate

Just note down my details - if I must, I can wait.

"Thank you for reading so far, can't complain

Angela Lansbury's my memorable name,

I can write a poem about your name too

Whatever you need, prose or poem, I'll do."

"A poem, or novel, or begging letter

Is hard to start, you think you'll do better

You write and rewrite, and stay up half the night

It still doesn't look right, when re-read in daylight.

"The difficult part is not how to end it

The hardest part is the courage to send it.

Some poems are written to cause a commotion

But others are glimpses of hidden emotion.

Some poems aggressively rumble and shout

Some poems let author's wild anger break out

Others whisper a secret, share common distress

"Do you feel this, too?" The sweet reader nods, yes.

I changed fire anger to wild anger. Fire is stronger and more original. But wild is easier to read and perform.

Tell Me All Your Troubles version 2

Do tell me all of your troubles
Deaths and divorces, don't ask mine
'cos I'll tell then regret it
I say too much, all the time

I'll tell the stranger on the train
Someone I'll never see again
So if they think I'm mad or bad
They won't say so and make me sad

I'll offload sadness and sorrow
To strangers who are gone tomorrow
Who won't still be there to remind me
So I can put it all behind me

But tell me all your troubles
So I can sympathise
I won't pretend I'm a success
No need to tell you polite lies

I won't tell you all my troubles
Revive what I'd rather forget
I don't dare tell you the whole truth
Sometimes it's better not

Books talk about self-doubt
And the imposture syndrome
Ive come here for a holiday
To escape my problems at home

But I watch the woman confessing all
On stage, in poems, I sympathise
I want to tell you my truth and my lies
Unburden, share all with smiling eyes.
