Night Without Light. Comical Poem 846 by Angela Lansbury

I knew the time was three a.m.

Everything was dark again

When I wake at night and everything's dark

Darker than trees in a closed park

Darker than streets without any lights

Darker than moonless, cloud-free nights

Darker than oceans of endless deep

Darker than nights of dreamless sleep

So dark that all birds and cats are asleep

Even emails and whatsapp are scared to bleep

Somewhere out there the hiding stars

Like clouds, work done, have all gone home

Leaving me here, all alone

What to wear tomorrow? I can't decide

Every useful thought has died

Even the luminous shoes are hiding

So dark I can't see a single dress

But the lack of light banishes distress

Because everything matches, what could I lack?

My perfect wardrobe's all matching black

All's black as coal in a coal-black sack

The files and socks, the silent clock

But I can tell it's 3 am

Because my black sheets call me back again

I looked for good illustrations

About my poem on black night

I like to end text with happy thoughts

You can't see pictures - they're all white.

Next day in the morning

I can see  that light is dawning

I still need to put on a light

I love the light, so bright and white

At night I'm thankful for the moon

But when the day comes I love the sun

I like the candle which I rolled

Electric light extends day's fun.

Mother's Smiling Face. Comical poem 816 by Angela Lansbury.

Netta Lansbury. Mother of Angela Lansbury. Photo from Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

Everywhere I go, mother follows me

She smiles perpetually, encouraging me

Her face in photos on the wall

I won't forget that smile at all

I know I'm just daydreaming

I understand how to others it seems

The dead are still alive

And speak to you in dreams

I don't mope, nor cling to vain hope

But choose only happy memory

We lived a long life of laughter

Together, that's how we wanted it to be

So everywhere I see her face

Although she's in some other place

Her smile and laughter's still with me

As I preserve her memory.

Alive or Dead In Bed comical poem 762 by Angela Lansbury

I wake, there's silence in the room

I feel a dreadful sense of doom

Right now snoring would be relief

Hearing a grunt or something brief

There is a body in the bed

Still sheet over body and head

I cannot see the body breathe

I wonder if I ought to leave

It's not a murder, there's no knife

We're simply at the end of life

I know this news is rather dire

The time you die's when you retire

I stand and watch, there is no sound

I try to pull the sheet right down

But it is tightly wrapped around

Two empty slippers on the ground

A tickle or a gentle stroke

Hurray, he turned, at last he woke

He's wide awake and he is cross

Much better than a total loss

Grumpy has a cup of coffee

I prepare a cup of tea

I am smiling, I am happy

I've got him back alive with me.

The glass half full comical poem by comic Angela Lansbury comical pom 672

Did I start my day with a glass half full?

I can't remember, I gulped water down

I took a deep breath, I re-filled it up

I went on to a full coffee cup

I'll re-start my day with 'a glass full up'

Take my pill, drink water down, smile around

A great metaphor, think of happy days

Spread happiness like butter, round and round

My fine wine glass is gleaming clean, empty

So it should be at only ten a.m.

I need a dry day, or two, maybe six

Driving, before I dare to drink again

I day-dream of dancing at a wedding

An end to searching for the perfect one

Before I married I wasted free time

I felt my life was like a job half done

A month in a wheelchair turned my thoughts round

Now talking and walking are a great joy

I'm so happy to be me and healthy

Silly living my life with thoughts upside down

Its great to see good food on a full plate

I've a roof not leaking above my head

M parents gone but I've husband and son

I've a chair, a pen, a book, and a bed

I've a smart old laptop and a smart old phone

I've had a lot of jobs, many lessons learned

I've friends and enamies who've come and gone

Today I'm alone but don't feel alone

I chat to strangers like friends on the bus

Dozens talk nonsense on the internet

I've funny friends who I remember well

Odd and awkward ones we should all forget

Each day a million tiny things go wrong

The bus, taxi or plane will turn up late

I shrug at creaking floors, and squeaking doors

The tardy friend who always makes us wait

I've plenty of non-urgent things to do

I've ten jumbled poems in my small head

But I'll find time to listen hard to you

Before I escape to my soft silk bed.

You're My Honey Bee comical poem 595 by Angela Lansbury

Bee and honeycomb. Wiki article on bees.

I heard a little buzzing bee

And that reminded me of me

When you are buzzing at my door

And then I thought and thought some more

I saw a little honey bee

And that's like you, calling on me

I'm your honey and you're my bee

And that's the way it's meant to be

But then a saw a flying fly

Annoying me as it flew by

I thought of us and wondered why

I think of you and doubt and sigh

I wonder if you'll fly away

And leave me all alone one day

I've thoughts which I don't like to say

I want to have a happy day

I heard you buzzing at my door

I thought my happy thoughts once more

As all who know us, say they see

We look just like two honey bees

Honey makes treats sweet to eat
I'll give you honey when we meet.

I think you're wise, You think I'm funny

I like your eyes, I am your honey

We are just like two honey bees

The perfect pair, just you and me.

Good And Bad Poetry comical poem 557 by Angela Lansbury

 Some poetry is really good

Although a lot of it is bad

Good poems make you happy

Bad poems make you sad

Some of it's propaganda

And makes you seething mad

Sometimes it grabs with double rhymes

So you are doubly glad

Some of it tells mostly lies

Yet one line of it rings true

Some of it tells you nothing

The best tells you what to do

Sometimes you think you'd do better

Writing prose, shopping lists or a letter

Sometimes it keeps you awake

Sometimes you read politely for some sweet person's sake

Sometimes it's just a cliche

But sometimes it won't go away

Sometimes it helps you through the night

Make you nod all day, the world's all right

Then you think I'm glad

There's someone just like me

The me calling from yesterday

Exact, succinct, and meant to be

Sometimes you wonder

Where is this going?

The writer must be mad

But there's no way of knowing

Sometimes you are glad

When you're nearing the end

Yet that poem that matters

Brings a new poet, new thoughts, a new friend.

Why Was He Running? Comic poem number 427 by Angela Lansbury

 He was running, running, running

I stared - he was not one of us

Why was he running, urgently?

I see, he's running for a bus ,,,

I stopped, watched, 'cos if he'd missed it

I would have sighed and felt quite sad

But that's wonderful, he caught it

He's just a stranger, but I'm glad

Sometimes when its a rainy day

I'm sad, no reason, in a tiz

But today I'm feeling happy

Sometimes that's just the way it is

I enjoy the warmth of sunshine

I wear a pretty summer dress

A stranger's joy is now made mine

I share a stranger's small success

Sweetheart, the moral 's quite simple

If you are caring, wait awhile

Sorrows and worries fade away

When you share someone else''s smile.

Little Birds Tweeting Greeting comic poem 390 by Angela Lansbury

A little birdy boy is tweeing

Not saying, 'Boy,  I am annoyed,'

No, it's, 'I'm here, happy greeting

Listen to me talking, tweeting!'

What he means I'll never know

Is it, 'Come here,' or, 'Let\'s go'

My ear hears what he has to show

So I'm going with the flow

I do not hear him the next hour

The silver birch his ivory tower

He hides inside soe garden bower

One sweet son'g enough to empower

His voice stays higher, never lower

Like me singing in the shower

Always faster never slower

Maybe the dear cat makes him cower

But despite the joy I heard

In my garden not one bird

Leaves, green grass, yellow flowers

I could sit and stare  for hours

But something outside isn't right

Litter strewn throughout the night

In the garden playful foxes

Tore apart discarded boxes

Out I rush, sweep, pick it up

Drop it in a litter bin

I'm not glum, job is done

Fox is out, litter is in

Fox ran off, bird flew away

Now it's time to start my day

I have wasted hours and hours

First pick litter, then pick flower

One must do whatever needs -

Cut dead branches overhead

Cut back roots and pull out weeds

Now a neater flower bed

What a day, a lovely start

Vase of flowers lights my heart

Birds and foxes, beg your pardon

It's my turn to own my garden.

Student Teaches Student Teacher - black comic poem 185 by Angela Lansbury

😊

Years ago I was a student teacher

In a London East End girl's grammar school

My job was teaching them basic grammar

Spelling, writing and fun poetry rules

Each day's challenge caused me stress

Each day's lesson plan a mess

What subject could I get them to write on

Something they knew, which wouldn't take long?

All my schoolday's thoughts were wrong

Teachers worry all the night

Pupils have an easy time

The subject set, all you do is write

Into the lesson, what to do?

Truly I didn't have a clue

But this is one thing that I knew

Everyone thinks I'd rather be you

I saw blank and worried faces

How I wished we could change places

Teaching, responsibility

I bet that they all envied me

Family - they might not have a sister

Family - they might not have a brother

So I set an easy task which all could do

Write us a short poem on, 'My mother'

Most of them found this subject easy

Sample rhymes, they smiled, it was exciting

Twenty-nine out of thirty happy girls

Busily started muttering, writing

But one girl in the back, statue-stiff sat

Her face blank, motionless, just a slight frown

She ignored her sheet of lined white paper

No title, no word had been written down?

!

I raced back to ask my supervisor

'She won't write at all, what ought I to do?'

🔇

The English head said, 'Leave her alone, dear,

In the break, I'll explain it all to you.'

But in the break, the teacher was busy

Looking back, I wish I'd left her alone

I insisted, 'Please - you must tell me why!'

Frankly, friends, I'd much rather not have known

'Last night that teenage girl went to her home

In the hall the mother was lying dead

We're sure the no good lover had stabbed her

The girl put her little brother to bed

'In the morning she dressed him for his school

She walked him to his school, which was quite near

She came and asked to see the headmistress

But couldn't find the words to speak when here

She gave us the doorkey, we went to see

No answer, knock, enter, what happened was clear

She and her brother will stay at their schools

We hope that she'll finish her final year

'We have a social worker on the case

She'll spend the day finding them a new home

But, as for writing about mother

Until she's ready, best - leave her alone ...'

The bell rang, I was off to my next class

Why do I still think about time long past

You have to wait until you reach the stage

When images make words flow to the page

Maybe, reader (listener,) I shouldn't upset you

With this memory dredged from my far past

Yet, it still troubles me, I must over write

Hide thoughts which otherwise linger and last

***

Why should we upset readers or list'ners

About a sad story of a stranger

There's no point in us being serious

Unless we are warning of real danger

Comic poetry's flippant and silly

The lesson is happy, the lesson is clear

Humour pushes sad thoughts away

I want you to be happy, my dear

My name's easy, Angela Lansbury

I do hope that you'll kindly remember me

I like attention, but being happy

So, mostly I write comic poetry

It's not serious, and it's not all sad

It should make you laugh, end up feeling glad

So that after a drumming while

We all see lots of dancing, swaying smiles

I want you, my new friends, to be happy

And smile whenever you think about me

That's why I strive all day, and half the night

To read and write, light, comic poetry.

Helpful Hint

What if you don't have a spellchecker and grammar checker in a blog, but you do have one in another medium, such as Powerpoint or Word? You compose your text in the place with the spell checker and grammar checker. Correct your draft. Then copy the corrected text into its final location.

If you want to read your poetry on Zoom or perform it live, put the poems onto slides which can be projected. That helps people who cannot speak English as a first language. The backup of written text is also useful if there are problems with projection such as the microphone or Zoom.

What's more it is professional. And entertaining, if you can illustrate with comical illustrations, or pretty borders. Or even animation.

I'm happy, happy, happy

I'm happy, happy, happy, yes
Like a cat that's climbing a tree
When you see someone smiling back
That's somebody who's just like me

When you see me smiling at you
You should be smiling at me, too
So somebody watching can see
Then join to make a smiling three

I drew myself in a mirror
Concentrating - I didn't smile
Friends said, "It's not a bit like you
You haven't frowned for a long while

So I'll re-draw myself smiling
So that my picture looks like me
Because I'm always so happy
As happy as can be, be be

Make the most of the days you've got
'cause you may not be here so long
So be like me, be creative
Do a drawing or write a song

I'm happy, happy, happy, yes
Like a cat that's climbing a tree
So if I see you smiling back
I'll know you're happy, just like me!

Nodding, smiling, thumbs up, happy
Two hand clappy, two feet tappy
Nodding, smiling, thumbs up happy
Clappy, clappy, happy happy

Happy-happy, happy-happy;
Happy-happy, happy-happy
Happy-happy, happy-happy;
Happy-happy, happy-happy.

Now I'm sure you know the refrain
Now you're sure, sing it once again:
Two hand clappy? Two feet tappy!
Happy-happy, happy-happy!
