The Fall comical poem number 873 by comic Angela Lansbury

Autumn is coming, Americans call

It not falling leaves, but simply the Fall

I wobble like leaves, wander down the hall

But smartly grab walls and don't fall at all.

Should I admit that recently I fell?

That was back in June, in autumn I'm well

New exercises, full of surprises

Make sure if I fall I roll like a ball.

Practical Information On Preventing Falls And Falling Safely

Safe Falling Demonstration

I recall at a |Toastmasters International club in Singapore, which met at the Sheraton hotel, the late Laurence who had had part of one leg amputated, enjoyed shocking the audience by pretending to fall up the steps to the middle of the dais. He would fall and immediately right himself, and gleefully lift his trousers to show his wooden ankle.

He always got applause and was voted the best table topics speaker. (He was volunteering to give 2 minute impromptu speech on one of the topics which in the 1920s when TI started in the USA were on pieces of paper on the table, face down, selected randomly.)

After writing this poem I started wondering how you avoid a fall. I seem to remember that he had learned to fall safely at martial arts classes, which are very popular in Singapore, and taught to all ages in the Community Centres in every area.

I asked AI for advice on falling.

Minimize the impact and protect vital areas of your body using specific physical techniques:

  • Protect your head: Tuck your chin firmly into your chest immediately to prevent your head from whipping backward and striking the ground. Wrap your arms around your head to shield it from debris or hard surfaces.

  • Roll with the fall: Avoid keeping your body rigid. Instead, try to curve your back and roll along the fleshy parts of your body (such as your shoulder, hip, and thigh) to distribute the impact over a larger surface area rather than a single point.

  • Avoid breaking falls with straight arms: Never extend your arms stiffly. Also don't lock your elbows to catch yourself, as this often results in wrist breaks and hairline cracks, dislocated shoulders, or broken collarbones. If your hands must hit the ground, keep your elbows slightly bent.

  • Fall sideways if possible: If you feel yourself losing your balance backward or forward, try to twist and land on your side. Landing flat on your back can knock the wind out of you or injure your spine. But falling directly forward risks injuring your face, mouth and teeth area.

  • Keep joints loose: Allow your knees to remain slightly bent rather than locked straight to help absorb some of the shock.

  • I asked where Gemini got the information

  • Gemini took the essential points from Mayo Clinic on Fall Prevention, and Medical Guardian on How to Fall Safely. Gemini rewrote the information without technical terms, without long words such as velocity. Gemini also left out advice on clothing and furniture. I have further edited Gemini's text into simpler, everyday language, leaving out such terms as kinetic energy, trauma, dental, while, fractures. This helps me to grasp the facts at a glance, as well as helping all my readers in countries such as Singapore, whose location is listed in my blogger's Google analytics pages.

Children - Curse But Blessing Later comic poem 422 by Angela Lansbury

Angela as a child and teenager. B/W polyphotos. Phot by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

A baby gives a hearty cry

To warn it's not prepared to die

No way will this thing go away

You'll be its slave both night and day

Whether you welcome boy or girl

You're trapped in a commercial whirl

And if your joy has turned to doubt

Ask yourself, how'd it come about

A boy and girl got together

Any seasonk, any weather

Decide that they'll stay together

Every season, every weather

A babe's a blessing you must keep

Although you lose a lot of sleep

Each day brings changes you will see

You'll get more sleep when it's past three

It starts to walk, it starts to talk

Falls on the floor, can open doors

Seven years of cute clothes heaven

Before teens, adults, cost you more

Now here's the most imprtant thing

You need a house more than a ring

A child's a blessing from above

Plants need water, for kids add love

Maybe the teenage years are tough

But you'll reach old age soon enough

Children warm you when you feel cold

They visit you 'though you look old

Depending what you said and did

Children like toys, you lift their lid

Treat well, tidy troubles away

They'll save you on a rainy day

Treat them with love, or treat with hate

For the results you have to wait

Don't be blind but make up your mind

Todays be kind, it's not too late.

Remember what ges up coes down

What goes around will cme around

Remember what you say and do

One day through them comes back to you.

Hearing Children Running And Screaming

 Hearing Children Running And Screaming

by Angela Lansbury

Small children love to jump and run

They won't stay still, running's more fun

They like to push, scream, splash and shout

They zig zag, bump, fall, leap about

They race and fall, parents don't care

Kids knock you down, they like to share

They do not speak if they can shriek

I'll die or go deaf by next week

Save sanity, observe these rules

Don't live beside an infants' school

Don't read beside a swimming pool

Save hearing, bruised limbs, with these tools.

Remember granny's old wise words

Kids look cute, seen, - not raced, nor heard!

I want to speak but hold my breath

I think their Mum and Dad are deaf.

Ten Would-be Writers by Angela Lansbury

Ten newbie writers, backed against the wall
If they had too much to drink,
The tipsiest might fall
Leaving nine scared new writers, backed against the wall

One would-be writer fancied cosy crime
Did too much research, so now he's doing time
Climbed the highest mountain, so he had a nasty fall
Leaving eight scared new writers, backed against the wall

Eight dropped out of poetry and went to write a song
Severn was left wing and went to right the world's wrongs
Number six tossed dice and wrote a convoluted plot
Five co-authors, wrote five suspects and four endings they forgot

One slept on the floor, he was number four
A mystery writer vanished, that left only three
One would be writer ran off to reality TV
One writer left, one reader stayed - two, only you and me

I've been writing my first novel twenty years or more
I'm no longer a newbie, I'm the one you saw before
Why aren't you writing? Don't be a zero
Write me praise and thank yous and you will be my hero.
