The Cup On the Saucer Went Round And Round THE FISH ON THE DISH. Comical dinner Table poem number 771 by Angela Lansbury

Round Nespresso saucer with square centre. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

I was inspired to write a parody of The wheels on the bus. But instead of simple repetition, for pre-schoolers, the poem took another direction.

It became more like an ironic ballad. Such as, A hole in my bucket, Dear Liza.

Another influence, is the exaggerated cautionary tale. For want of a nail the battle was lost.  Humorous examples are The Lion And Albert, and Matilda told such dreadful lies.

My poem tells a tale of endless dining disasters, and constant disagreements. And how we tried to cope and cover up.

I started with the title The Cup On the Saucer Went Around and \around, but changed the words

THE FISH ON THE DISH

On the day we dined up in town

We arrived soon, late afternoon,

First had water, black or green tea

Hubby, rich son, wife, Teeny-tot, poor me

The balcony table was round

It was the largest one we found

But cutlery fell on the ground

With a dreadful, clattering sound

The cup's saucer was square on round

The cup on the saucer went up and down

Up to my mouth, I made slurping sound

My husband's hand waved, 'Tone it down!'

's

My coffee was strong, it sat too long

My cream was white the sugar brown

I twirled the spoon in my cup round

It made a dreadful squeaky sound

The water jug was passed around

It got lost and was never found

Somebody must have put it down

On another table or on the ground.

The sugar lump bowl sent around

I sighed, 'I've put on half a pound!'

I took two lumps, put a third down

Dad shook his head, tutted and frowned.

The mixed fish cake dish went around

'Is this cod?' 'Salmon.' 'Tuna.'  'Trout?

'It's monster fish - it's been renamed

All doled from the same tin no doubt!'

To go with fish, the chips went round

The tomato ketchup bottle went round

Dad shook it up, and down his shirt

He said short words, 'Fish!' I looked hurt

The plate of pizza passed around

So everybody took one slice

The pineapple pizza looked so nice

That I took two, nobody knew

The birthday cake had candle flames

The chef had mis-spelled both our names

I said, 'Never mind, Grandpa's blind, pass the cake around!'

The sponge, jam, cream all soon went down

(

The waiter said, 'Happy Birthday' to me

I said, 'It's our anniversary

For last week's birthday, an anniversary cake

'Sorry, Ma-am. A mistake.'  'Three mistakes!'

The box of chocolates passed around

But 'baby' knocked them on the ground

You can't eat chocolates when they fall.

(At home I washed and ate them all!)

I ordered coffee but got tea

I complained, 'both taste the same to me

Both taste like coffee-tea, the same

Where's the manager?' 'Gone home. Not to blame'

I asked, 'Why is this bill so large?'

They said, 'It's our high service charge,'

Son smiled, 'That's fine, I understand -

There's always something underhand.'

True story: Our Happy Birthday cake was given to a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary at the Alpine Restaurant, (in Bushey, London) - which later closed down.

Coffee-tea was a story told about some airlines. I thought it was a joke. But somebody who worked in the industry said it was true, to save time.

(More verses later on salt, pepper, bread, olives, ice cream, coffee, juice, milk, sweets)

Make up tea or dinner related words.

Much too long was a parody of all day long.

If Only Food Were Salesmen 717 comical poem by Angela Lansbury

Hot crumpet with melting butter. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

If only food could sell itself

I wonder what my food would say?

I'm an orange,  juicy fresh peach

Dark chocolate brightens your day

I'm the reddest ripe tomato

I'm horseradish white as the moon

Avocado, baked potato

I was a plum, I'm now a prune

I'm the best almond marzipan

I'm pistachio baklava

I'm the frozen roll-out pastry

Make pies and tarts, no palaver

I'm the bulbous, blackest berries

I'm green crisp apples on long stalks

I'm the reddest, sweetest cherries

Grape vines climbing, they walk, don't talk

I'm grainy, tasty French mustard

Currant buns, muffins mothers make

I'm pudding with pooling custard

I'm tasty, iced, fruit birthday cake.

I'm the coffee served with thick cream

I'm pretty pictures drawn in foam

Lick the plate, then eat After Eight

Freedom plus fine flavours at home.

Ava Indoors, Outdoors Birthday Party comic poem number 452 by Angela Lansbury

Ava who's' three, has lots of friends

With birthday parties at weekends,

When it's sunny and she's free

She goes for walks with her family.

When it's sunny and she's free

She goes for walks with her family.

When it's midweek she likes to cook

And when she'd done we read a book.

When it's midweek she likes to cook

And when she's done we read a book.

Ava's three, has lots of friends

With birthday parties at weekends

Ava, who's three, has lots of friends

With birthday parties at weekends

She wraps a present she can take

Thinks fish and chips, fruit, birthday cake

She wraps a present she can take

Thinks fish and chips, fruit, birthday cake

I'm happy cos we'll be there soon

Jugs of red drink, and pink balloons

Ava, who's three, has lots of friends

With birthday parties at weekends

But if there's one day when it rains

She always smiles, never complains

Yes, if there's one day when it rains

She always smiles,, never complains

When it's midweek she likes to cook

And when she's done we read this book.

Name Changes

For the customer, recipient of the book, or babysitter, the name can be changed to that of the child being  read to or receiving the book and reading it to a younger brother or sister.

For example

One Syllable Names

For one syllable names (such as Ann, James, John, change to Ann who is three.

Two Syllable Names

For two syllables, like Ava, Anna, Emma, Henry, Lucas, Mia, Noah, Peter, change to Ava's three, Anna's three, Peter's Three. Other two syllable names include, Ali, Mary, Christos, Richard, Johnny, Paris,, Rina, Tina, Sharon,

Three Syllable names

Three Syllable include, according to the list of top names in the USA in 2003, include (my alphabetical order, not popularity which was the order published),Elijah, Mateo, Oliver, Theodore, William, Evelyn, Sophia.

Four Syllables -

Four syllable names are mostly girls' names which add an a on the end, which include Amelia, Isabella, Olivia,

Age Changes

The age can be changed to one, two, three, four, five, six, eight, nine, ten (or a word in another language in a bilingual home, such as French, un deux, trois, German ein, zwei, drei, Spanish dos, tres.

This is the first time I have tried my new rhyming scheme, repeating the last couplet of each verse as the opening of the next verse.

I shall do another version tomorrow, using the words biking and hiking.

For a family or child or culture without birthday parties, change the words to with the family or sees the family at weekends.

I though of changing and thinks there might be birthday cake, to

'Thinks, sandwiches, fruit, birthday cake,' which sounds healthier, but m original version is easier for a 3 year old to say and understand.

Birthday Cake

Birthday cake made for Angela by Trevor. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

Cake by Angela Lansbury

Cake, cake, let me eat cake
It's my birthday, for goodness sake
There's a limit to diets that I can take
It's iced and its nice and it's birthday cake

Let the guests in
See what their eyes say
'When can we begin?'
Don't send them away

I know it's not the best food for my health
But don't let me eat it all by myself
You've no idea the time taken to bake
The hours it took me to decorate

Go away, but I'll let you take
A tiny piece of my birthday cake
All those dieting promises I must break
Let me eat cake - and let them eat cake.
