Whose Point Of View? comical poem number 724 by Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury, author, smiling with a large yellow smiley sculpture. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Please share photo and caption.

From a mosquito's point of view

The main purpose of me and you

Is to provide a tasty treat

Make sure it gets enough to eat

And from a worms eye point of view

The main purpose of me and you

Is to provide a feast for worms

Full of vitamins and nice germs

From a God's long term point of view

We are not put here to complain

About the rain, nor pray for rain

The water circles round again

From reincarnation's strange view

The next purpose of me and you

I'll see your view, then I'll be you

You'll see like me, and you'll be me.

Mosquitos, What Everybody Knows, comic poem 416 by Angela Lansbury

My Floret fly spray. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

As everybody educated knows

I don't like fleas, big bees, wasps nor mosquitos

I don't like to see bites on my fingers

Nor my face, legs, body, back or toes

I do not like to hear them flying past

A sudden silence fills my mind with dread

I don't like them flying, living, dying

I'm not even keen on them drop dead

I don't like them flying around my house

In the kitchen, shower, bath, near the bed

I don't like one anywhere near me here

I fondly wish them somewhere else instead

If they are gone tomorrow we'll forget

On bad days, things could be worse, they're a curse

Each job, ask or task could be much worse yet

By adding in bites from a mosquito.

Now I've sprayed away, is there any good

When you hear that whine, droning mosquito?

I've no measles chicken pox, polio

Shingles, meningitis, no tests - I know

No harm from friendly spiders, helpful bees

Good! Not meningitis nor impetigo

No rashes, scorpions nor a hornet

It's just the buzz - of losing a mosquito.

Windows are open, hope it won't take long

Before enemy number one has gone

Then I can sing a happy, cheerful song

About the right to right a dreadful wrong.

Travel Writers' Rites and Rights Comic poem 203

My husband likes mountain biking

Me? Swimming pools, ground floor motels

He likes camping, motor bikes, tents

I prefer small, five-star hotels

My husband climbs a volcano

He jogs to raise heartbeats and sweat

But for me gyms are a no-no

Find Jacuzzis, Western toilets

Travelling is a compulsion

We're running from and running to

I'm willing to brave adventure

But I'll leave the driving to you

If the plane's late and we must wait

I won't complain, just claim, survive

When the plane has landed safely

It's just enough to be alive

I must be taken door to door

All clothes and shoes stacked in the car

It takes us a week to check-in

And unpack wherever we are

I'm running away from my home

I'm running away from my stress

I'm running away from clutter

Soon the hotel room's the same mess

I've been to so many places

I need to check where I have been

Seen vineyards on each continent,

Bought green bottles of each cuisine

I'm taking photos all day long

Station murals, symbols on trains

Sheep block the road, grinning shepherd

Small seats, set meals on grand big planes

-

Recording everything as if

For a future book on the past

Record like I'll live for ever

Record as if today's my last

Record: when things are different

Record: to show we're all the same

Record: to praise things to copy

Car hire dents: prove I'm not to blame.

To share excitement with the world

Send parents secrets on WhatsApp

To show that I've arrived safely

To prove that I've got safely back

I cannot show the hat I've lost

I never show streets without lights

I find bargains, complain of costs

But never show mosquito bites

Past tsunamis, wars, ghosts, murders

Endless mysteries to unravel

 Australia  - Albania

Yo-yo, boomerang of travel.

Now we've Instagram, Pinterest

Interviews and video clips

What do I share from my travel

Warnings, secrets, and handy tips.

Singapore - what do I like? Comic poem number 152 by Angela Lansbury

Singapore, Singapore

What do I like?

Every day shopping

And one day I'll hike

I can take Uber

Or MRT trains

Or watch 3 films on

Singapore Airlines planes

What should you pack?

I'm always forgetting

Thick cut marmalade

And mosquito netting.

The orchids, magenta

Palm trees, lipstick and green

When food courts are dirty

Limping old folks sweep clean

Singapore is a place

Where I know I'll survive

Law-abiding, and silent

Then I'll stay alive.

If they say wear masks

Then we all wear masks

We do what we're told

They just have to ask

They have Disney style barriers

Outside public halls

Polite army cadets

At the entrance to malls

I can register a scooter

Or hire a bike

Trains and roads run in circles

What's not to like?

If I end up paying double

I might feel a bit cross

But a quiet guard helps

Whenever I'm lost

I can queue at the bridge

Go abroad - half day getaway\

But I'm glad to be home

See sunrise, then storms, then sunsets, most days.

I can eat all cuisines

If I want, I can swim

Join religions which permit armies

Join the army, pray, sing hymns.

Almost all speak Chinese

But at school learn English

They'll understand you

But can you translate Singlish?

It's simple,

An exclamation ends 'la!'

It's simple

A question ends 'ma?'

It's simple, it's easy

The word mother is ma

For mummy, or two mothers

You screech (high tone) ma-ma.

They are all keen to help

They chatter and smile

They even have smiles

On cross cockroaches, cross dragons and cross crocodiles.

I've a doctor or dentist

If I'm willing to pay

First thing tomorrow

If it's too late today.

I can turn on the air con

In a gym, ride a bike

Ride a bus round in circles

What's not to like!

Komodo dragons are in the Singapore Zoo, and alarming monitor lizards are freely wandering in the Botanical gardens. The friendly monkeys would love to destroy your house. You only have to open a patio window when you see one. There is no mosquito netting, no fly screens.

I am a Singapore resident. I was not born there. I chose to live there. My husband went there for work, got used to wearing shorts all year, and paying less tax. So we stayed.

Another Cockroach On The Floor and a Spider's Web Over The Bed

Another Cockroach on the Floor and a Spider Over The Bed
a lament by Angela Lansbury

I am barefoot in the bathroom
There's a cockroach on the floor
Which is worse, running or still -
Between me and the door?

If there's one thing I don't like
It's a spider on the bed
I'm sure its bad for flies
But now it hurts my head

Right now things would be better
If one of us were dead.
When I see a spider's web
Lurking empty overhead

I wonder where the spider's gone
It's bound to show, before too long
If I stay still and look around
Inspecting walls, ceiling and ground

Brooches shaped like beetles I don't like a bit
What use is a cockroach, a mosquito-ridden lake
Though I'm prepared to eat a pig-shape chocolate
And I've had round salmon-pink 'steak' from a cut-up snake

But another thing I don't like at all
Is ants on a table or desk
Although a gecko which eats them is useful
Up the wall, like me, devouring pests

We have filled the floor with insect traps
We're choking on insect spray
It's another day in the tropics
But neither they, nor I, will go away.

I read somewhere that cockroaches
Have survived a million years
Frankly a single insect, now
Is enough to tug at my fears

I can throw it through the window
Pretend I did it a favour
I didn't kill it - it might come back
Thinking I am its saviour.

Hi God, a poem by Angela Lansbury on Does God Exist In Gardens

Hi God by Angela Lansbury

"Does God exist in gardens, Gran?
Looks like the devil's out there, too
If you like bites from mosquitos
Sorry to say I'm not with you!"

"Let's look around our garden, child
Then you'll be sure there is a God "

Invite your friend to I take a look
Under a log; bulbs, worms in sod ..."

I pick a rose, scratched by a thorn I dodge, we see a honey bee
Pick blackberries, dress stained and torn
A bee, or wasp, starts chasing me ...
We try to hide behind a tree

I move a plant pot, ear wig, louse
It doesn't even take a snake
Slugs drive us back into the house

I try to smile and not to sigh
"It's sunny, phone the family
Try to be good, don't make a fuss."
"When we die what eats you and me?"
When health and safety call on us

They check for mice, mosquitos, rats
Bugs live outside, must look for holes
 Roaches invade kitchens of flats
I sometimes think I should desist
I would not want to lose a friend
An agnostic or atheist

Can see both sides and round life's bend
If firm belief secures one's fate
Grandchild's debate makes blood run cold
It's time to choose, not quite too late
Don't lose faith now,
Gran - you're too old!

My rose is pretty, its perfume
Would make believers of the blind
Yes, pinks, and blues brighten my room
But bee's buzz, greenfly, change my mind.

Angela Lansbury. Copyright Saturday, 6 May 2017.

Author's note Pinks are the colour of roses but also the name of another kind of flower.

I started writing a poem about the mixed blessings of a garden. I changed the poem to one in which an atheist or agnostic grandma debates with a child. I added another verse and changed it again to the worried child trying to secure a place in Heaven for grandma.
