Words & Signs Warn On The Bus And Train. Comical poem 775 by Angela Lansbury.

One of the joys of modern life

Robots nag like an alert wife

Phone's to do list says: Mow the grass

In five minutes your bus will pass.

ZOOM

Up pops a message about Zoom

Requesting, 'Ma'am, please join the room,'

The word Ma'am tells me caller's Delhi,

Like Bollywood on the telly

BUS

I won't say, 'No. I'm on a bus.'

I never like to make a fuss

I quickly mute, I have no choice

Can't broadcast bus's robot voice

TRAIN

Then next I'm sitting on a train

With groups I'll never see again

Their clothes boast about where they've been

Who they are, and what sights they're seen.

Sweatshirts promoting a group. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Roller shoes. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

When not on trains some like to run

On sunny days jogging is fun

I saw roller shoes on that train

Which took me out then home again.

We Happily Met On the Internet Then He Asked Me For Too Much Money (part 2) 597 comic poem/song - how I revised my song

Version 2 comical poem by Angela Lansbury

I met you on the internet

You sent a link, to meet on zoom

I set alarms, must not forget

 Frantic, tidy my messy room

I'd well prepared washed my long hair

I found short jokes, cut canned laughter

Threw dice to choose ten tops to wear?

Poured a whisky glass of  - water

Background Checks

Two strangers had a bad moment

A sensible moment of doubt

I checked on you on - everywhere

I hoped you, too, had checked me out

PR &SALES

In PR and sales, you're no fool

You asked me, 'Are you ready?

'Are you prepared to follow rules?''

'Happy, solvent, thrifty, steady

TEACHERS

I knew mentors ask for money

It's what good teachers deserve

You must pay more for good honey

I said, 'No, Wait.' I'd lost my nerve

PRICES

It seems a very large amount

So I'm waiting for a discount

I wait to hear tips as you speak

And ask how much it costs per week

Maybe one day I shall return

If money fell from heaven

For what you teach and I could learn

At sale prices like Seven Eleven

 SALES OPTIMIST

Once you have given your sales pitch

Don't despair, you're not in the ditch

Although a slow sale is a hitch

Just one in ten can make you rich

Maybe today they got the sack

Just wait til they are on the track

If you can offer what they lack

Maybe one day, one will come back

***

PROMISES & DREAMS

Some promise you a wedding

Some help you with divorce

Some promise you a fortune

Spend a fortune on a course

Then we'll meet on the internet

I'll open my file, teach you to smile

Our happy song will make us strong.

You'll pay me. Do you want to bet?

-ends-

I added questions for suspense. I ended on a positive note. I changed the rhyming scheme from aabb, too predictable, to abab.

I changed won't take long, rather a weak phrase containing two negatives, won't and take long, to make us strang which is more positive.

won't forget is also a negative, double negative. But ir rhymes with intenet.

Set an alarm to not forget, a piece of history, or advice for children and adults. Not right for a song. A celebratory song, a song of ups and downs.

I changed set an alarm to not forget, which is mundane, changed to afraid to forget, adding emotion.

I set alarms Must not forget.

I started this thinking of an internet romance. The plot morphed into a business relationship, or an educational relationship in which the pupil overtakes the teacher. It's really what you want it to be, all kinds of internet relationships everywherer all day long.

Givers and Takers comic poem number 463 by Angel Lanssbury

Angela Lansbury at a Toastmasters International meeting as Project Evaluator. Copyright Angela Lansbury.

Some people are givers

Some people are takers

Some people are builders

Some people are breakers

Some good people are like me

Some good people are like you

Some  puzzled ask us what to do

Some certain tell us what to do

Though some are smart and some are fools

They all can follow simple rules

To save their money and build wealth

To exercise and guard their health

Some people are fixed from age three

Others are late developers

The world is full of different kinds

When in need, look for kind helpers

Some people nod, 'Wise words are nice ,'

Others shout, 'Don't give me advice!'

It looks good to help out strangers

Never put yourself in dangers

When old fok and places have gone

Make time to mourn, but then move on

Find the best which you can preserve

Give out praise to those who deserve

There's time for work so do not shirk

There's sme for fun and time for play

Use each hour of every day

And always put your toys away

A place for all, all in its place

And put a smile on every face

When no friends are in the room

Contact colleagues and friends on Zoom

Don't moan if you must work from home

If you must, then do what you must

To avoid Covid and the flu

Choose protection which you can trust

You can wear shorts, flip flops or silk

Any time, drink coffee oor tea

Select full cream, order skimmed milk

Wine, water, your choice, you are free

For the Sake of Old Time Friends comic poem 382 by Angela Lansbury

For the sake of our long lost friends

We have' gathered together today

I want to hear news from you all

But first hear what I have to say

Years ago, small, we went to school

Grew, one teenage girl was randy

The boys were always watching her

One of the big boys was handy

Alas, teachers were too trusting

They lacked a basic roll call rule

In a mixed school get mixed up, lost

Facts of life lessons can be cruel

We still can't be sure why she left

Where she hid, holidayed, was sent

Whether the child survived and thrived

What she did later, where she went

We learned a lot of book lessons

Geography and history

Our schooldays were a comedy

A tragedy and mystery

Some questions still are unanswered

We wonder how each story ends

And that is why we gather here

To learn the secrets from old friends

One of them nods, knows a secret

But says,"Yyou must not pass it on

About the people who're long gone

Friends, after all I could be wrong'

Events and faces in my mind

The last names of all, I forget

But one name I remember well

I found him on the internet

He said, 'I can't come to meet you

I'm caring for my frail mother

But I'm still in touch with schoolfriends

I'll link you up with another

That new one led me to one more

I kept on adding, three to four

Then four to five, remarkable

That they're all thriving and alive

So we agreed a month to meet

We fixed a time to eat, mid-day

A half way point, the countryside

Remote, but it was fair, mid-way

When we met at the pub, for great grub,

A guessing game, black hair turned grey

I know the face, forget the name

How did that shy girl reach such fame?

Time to let quarrels be bygones

Now's not the time for raising blame

Now is a good time to lie again

Pretend, 'Old friend - you look the same'

The pub is comfy and cosy

We choose good food but healthy drink

The past we recall was rosy

We don't say the home truths we think

Although now that we're getting old

We're direct, perceptive and bold

We speak warmly, though once were cold

Now fondly embrace all our fold

We never liked uniform dress

We've made mistakes, laugh and confess

We shrug, waiting,  minor distress

We're glad our shared bill's not more, less

'though randy Joe still looks frisky

He's half asleep after whisky

We're no longer bored by the bores

But kindly smile when somebody snores

With laughter and smiles, roll back years

Forget all fears, wipe joyful tears

Goodbye, I hope that when  next year ends

We'll reunite revived old friends.

If stuck in bed, in a bedroom

Then we can meet again on Zoom.

-ends-

I though I would write a revised version of Auld Lang Syne in modern language. However, it turned into a retelling of the delightful reunion in 2003 of my husband's old schoolfriends from a mixed grammar school in London, Viners, in the UK.

Written Tuesday Feb 20th 2023, the first few lines started as I lay in bed in the early hours of the monring. Fortunately I got back to sleep, but was able to re-create the opening and reach a satisfing ending next afternoon. Copyright Angela Lansbury. But please share with friends links to this post.

A Mother's Farther Happy Thoughts Comic poem 201

A newly-made widow, like Queen Victoria (12 syllables)

Can no longer enjoy a daily smile's euphoria  14

Can no longer feel the warmth of a passing hug 12

Nor supported by the erratic, so-called, constancy of love 16

When ogre, spectre Covid came sneaking along 12

It emptied every street, dispersing laughing throngs 12

We sat haunted, religiously, arguing from separate rooms 16

Near, though far, obsessed with loving our mutual pot plant blooms  15

We were imprisoned in the present 14

We travelled the world, sadly smiling on Zoom 11

But blocks of flats decided neighbours could still meet  12

And united the world with balconies of songs 12

If you are blessed to survive 7

You should be glad to be alive 8

When all the youngsters are again out having fun 12

You're wrinkled, old, bed-ridden, revered weekly as a wise one 15

Today when I am home alone 8

When half the world is half asleep 8

I look for a smart way 6

For love's illusions to keep 7

I'm way beyond young love's 6

Silly man-made illusion  7

And all that time-wasting 6

He loves me, loves me not, confusion 10

After all is said and done 7

My spouse is still the one 6

Who sends straightforward, sometimes angry, instructions 12

From miles away, I can shrug at any ructions 12

Yesterday my son came to visit 9

I am so pleased that he still cares 8

For me, his wife and child, and ask if I've written a will 14

Hidden millions, and shares 6

After dinner, I bought, 'we three', like Macbeth's witches, went shopping 16

My fingers sale-price almond croissant cropping 11

Strangers and shop assistants smile in the aisles, 11

I can cook a feast tomorrow from leftover crumbs of smiles 15

If for a moment no-one's beside me walking 12

They're obsessed with my cute grandchild, it's enough to be still talking 16

I can't be bothered arguing over shopping 12

I'm just glad my friendly credit card isn't credit stopping 15

Next day, I see a naughty fox left rubbish in the garden! 15

But I reverse my puzzled, pausing thoughts to pardon 13

To welcome proof something is alive and near 12

Just to be glad we living things are all still here 12

Last night my son supplied a farewell hug 10

At dawn, I hug, my warm, coffee mug 9

Address my plants, and laptops, no magic thoughts to miss 13

A stranger's poem blows a happy, hopping, hopeful kiss. 14
